Just when you thought you'd never find that vodka filled crystal Kalashnikov...
From a friend currently holed up in Moscow. I guess this is the equivalent of the rollerblading-cowgirl-dispensed Tequila shots.
The sweet smell of success

I won't name him, for fear of embarrassing him, but a friend of mine has a special asset that seems to make him extremely successful in life. Out for drinks in London last week, we ran in to someone he had worked with ten or twelve years ago and ended up having drinks with this chap - who'd been a client back in the day - in the wee hours of the morning. Slightly pickled and clearly delighted to see X, the client waxed lyrical about how great X had been to work with, how X was the nicest and most professional guy etc. etc. and how that had been the best job the client ever remembered.
And then the client leant over and stuck his nose into X's armpit. Sniffing deeply, he said
"Yep, and you are still the nicest smelling man in advertising."
Laughing, I asked the client if he was gay. Nope. He just remembered that X smelled great, even after a long day of slogging on a shoot when everyone else was hot and sweaty. That he always smelled great.
I turned to X and asked him if he got this reaction often. Bashfully, he replied that yes, he had often been told that he smelled good. But this is more than just good aftershave, apparently.
So now I know the secret of his success. Lucky are they that have the Smell Factor.

I used this phrase the other day, without really knowing what it was supposed to represent Yesterday, it was the headline in the Independent, something to do with cricket. So, where does it come from? Apparently from the Bible. And there I was thinking it had something to do with Lewis Carroll.
Losing my Marbles

I need some marbles. It's a weird physical therapy thing to exercise a wonky foot (picking marbles up repeatedly with one's toes - without getting a cramp). But can I find any marbles in this damn city? Apparently not.
I was wandering down a street full of Chinese wholesale toy shops in the garment district this morning and asked in at least 8 different shops whether they sold marbles. Nada, zip, zero. Eventually I asked someone why there were no marbles to be had in a perfect jam-packed toy shop. The answer was interesting, and perfectly sensible: they are too heavy. Not worth importing.
Hadn't really thought about the fact that the value to weight ratio of a marble is really very low.
